School Aged Children and Youth

Text Box: A focus on physical well being includes a Breakfast Club where school aged children receive morning nutrition to start their day. This is accessible without charge to any school aged children who wish to participate. They may also pack a lunch for school if they wish. Parents may help by cooking, serving, setup, cleaning, and meal planning. The program has been developed from a University of Guelph study indicating that parents had the knowledge about nutrition but sometimes lacked the means to provide adequate food for their children.
Physical well being is enhanced through social-recreational activities, which also help youth gain a sense of competency and mastery over their lives. Skills acquired will be transferred to school success, and to reduced family stress, as children learn problem solving skills and how to make good choices. In many cases parents find it difficult to afford activities offered in the larger community.
The Youth Council promotes leadership development for 15-20 youth 12-15 years of age, while helping 50-100 younger youth aged 5-12 who benefit from the interaction and support older youth provide. They operate the Shelldale Youth Room, developing guidelines for use, creating programs, fundraising, and putting their skills to use in the life of the Centre and its programs.
Holiday camps in the summer, during March Break, and over Christmas holidays expand the social-recreational supports for youth. Holiday camps provide parents with accessible and affordable options for their children while at the same time reducing family and community stress. They provide youth with opportunities for creative play, offsite trips, cultural enrichment, and nutritious snacks. For many youth, these camps are vacation time. They also provide a place for teens to continue to develop mentoring and leadership training skills.
